CES 2017 Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark ii & G7 X Mark ii

At CES 2017, Canon released their new second generation premium point and shoot camera, PowerShot G9 X Mark ii. Canon specifically targeted photo enthusiasts who wants to create great and professional content on the go. Let’s take a look.

Personally, I find this camera a great camera in terms of performance. However, I’m quite not sure with its ergonomics. The camera is simply too small, it is 3.9 inches wide, 2.3 inches tall, and 1.2 inch deep. I have fairly small hand and I had hard time using the controls. Buttons are hard to press and dials are hard to rotate. Unless you need a smallest camera in the world, I would reconsider G9 X Mark ii before purchasing. If you need super light weight with some professional features at a low cost, I wouldn’t hesitate getting this. Overall, it is an outstanding point and shoot exception for its small package. PowerShot G9 X Mark ii is available in two colors, black and brown, and is scheduled to be available by February for an estimated retail price of $529.99.

PowerShot G7 X Mark ii

G7 X Mark ii is for filmmakers, social influencers, and vloggers. From the box, you will receive 20.1 Megapixel, 1 inch CMOS censor with 24-100mm effective focal length lens. It’s priced at $699.99 MSRP, but I highly recommend their Video Creator Kit which includes the camera with an additional back up battery, Manfrotto PIXI tripod, and a 32GB SanDisk SD card. Video Creator Kit is available for pre-order at the Canon Online Store and is secluded to ship starting February at $749.99.

The camera itself is good. I’m not sure with its still photo capabilities, but video recording performance is outstanding. Canon’s TTL autofocus system along with face detection allows quick focus to acquired subject. ISO performance is impressive from this small camera. At ISO 8000, color contrast and reproduction is great and there’s no need to worry about weird noise getting into your video.

As expected from Canon, their consumer grade cameras are outstanding. A small form factor camera packed with performances and features is not that easy, but Canon seemed to pull it off very well and quite easy. Unfortunately, there is no 6D Mark ii or 7D Mark iii at CES 2017, but those two are rumored to be released any time soon. Let’s hope for later this year, especially Photokina. Thank you for visiting my CES blog, and I will see you in the next one!
